KEAM Engineering results will be published in a couple of days. Once the results are published every one will be busy preparing for online allotment of colleges and courses. One question that will haunt most of the candidates is - Which one is important? A good course or a good college. Of course the best option is to have the best course from the best college. Most of the candidates are not so fortunate to have that privilege. So we need to settle down either with a good course or with a good college.
In order to answer this question we have to check the campus placement statistics of top colleges. (Please note that one draw back in choosing a relative new college is that you will have little or zero chances to sit for campus placements. You will have to hunt for the job on your own.) We have analyzed 2011 placement data for College of Engineering Trivandrum and Government Engineering College, Thrissur.
College of Engineering, Trivandrum: According to the placement data in the official website, a total of 1104 job offers were made by various companies to BTech students. Out of these roughly 832 offers were made by IT Companies. This college has EC, AE, CS, EE, ME, CE & AR branches. 75% of BTech students of this college get into IT Companies irrespective of what course they have taken for BTech.
Government Engineering College, Thrissur: According to the placement data in the official website, a total of 330 offer were made by various companies to BTech students. Out of these roughly 296 offers were made by IT companies. This college has the following branches for BTech: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Production, Electronics, Computer & Architecture. 90% of BTech students of this college get into IT Companies irrespective of what course they have taken for BTech.
So what is the conclusion? Whatever BTech course you choose to study, you will eventually work for a IT Company doing software engineering job. Only a few (around 15% to 20%) work in core areas like Civil, Mechanical, Electronics etc. There is nothing wrong in working in a IT company. In India we have more job openings in IT than in any other field. Core companies in Mechanical, Civil, Architecture & Electronics also come for placements but only a handful gets placed by them.
Now answering the question we are debating. Course or College? It will be a good idea if you choose a well established college than a relatively new college. Why? You will get an opportunity to sit for campus placements in established college. You will have a job offer even before you finish the course, provided you have required percentage. You will also get better companies at campus. Those who are interested to join core companies will also get a chance to appear for such placements. And top colleges do have a good brand, good faculty and facilities. I would choose a better college than a better course if I had to choose one. As I said nothing better than the best course from best college. But if you have to choose one of Course or College, go for College.
Now if you are very keen in a subject for instance in Architecture, Electronics or Mechanical. And you are not getting seat in the established college for the desired college, then you can opt the next best college with that course. You can always hunt job once you complete the job in your desired field. But is lot more easier to have a job offer from campus. Also remember you are not the only ones who will be hunting jobs, 1000s of candidates pass out from engineering colleges all across India every year. Everyone will be looking for the same job that you are looking for.
Please use your judgement while making decision of your future. Please do not follow my advice blindly. Discuss with your parents, teachers and others before making the final choice.
