Get Ready for Online Allotment Process (CAP) for KEAM 2012

You have received your Medical Ranks and in some weeks time you will receive your Engineering ranks as well. The next important step in the whole admission process is CAP. CAP stands for Centralized Allotment Process. This is a single window to get admissions to Engineering, Architecture and Medical courses.

Selected candidates need to submit the options online based on their rank, category etc. CEE will process the online options and allot you a seat based on what you have chosen. You can keep the options list available so that you can get better seats. You also have an option to cancel all the options if you are satisfied with the allotted seat. There will be a trial allotment by CEE to allow users to check chances of getting admissions based on your choices. Please read the KEAM 2012 prospectus from pages 34 to 40. More details will also be available on CEE website.

In this post I will provide some tips on how to approach the CAP/ Online Allotment process. These tips will also help you to get the best possible seats with your ranks.

  1. You have to select options based on the the past data. Please make sure that you select courses/colleges that you are sure to get admission to.
  2. Just because you have entered a best college in the options list does not mean that you will get admission. Please do not waste your higher order options just by choosing the best colleges.
  3. The lower options will be automatically cancelled if you get an admission to a course. For example you have submitted 25 options. And lets assume that you got a seat for the 16th option. In this case options 17-25 will be cancelled. You will be considered for higher options if there is a vacant seat in due course.
  4. Please do not blindly enter all top colleges in the list. This will hamper you getting admissions to the best available option.
  5. Please note KEAM 2012 was considered to be easier than last year and so many more candidates will be in the rank list.
  6. Use Parinama Insight Tools to Check Best Possible Colleges and Closing Ranks of Colleges. This tool has data for 2009, 2010 and 2011. This is the only online tool available with so much of data for KEAM candidates.
How to select the best options for your rank and category?

Lets talk about this using an example. Lets assume we are talking about a candidate Ravi. He has got 7500 rank in Engineering and 3400th rank in Medical Entrance. He has EZ reservation quota. Lets see how Ravi selects the best available options. (It is recommended you take a print of this page and ask your parent/elder sibling to help you out.)

Step 1: List down your aspirations. Ravi wants either MBBS or a good seat in Govt Engineering College. He wants to join EC, IT or CS courses in top Engineering Colleges.
Step 2: Check out the last rank details for your rank. Ravi logs in to Parinama Insights to check what are the possible colleges he can get based on 2009, 2010 and 2011 closing ranks. First he check MBBS and then he goes for engineering courses.

He realized that based on his rank it will be extremely difficult to get MBBS course any where in Kerala. This is what he saw the possible seats he could get.

Now he gets to his Engineering courses. He searched for possible engineering options for his rank of 7500. Here is the list of colleges that he could get based on 2011 data. He checked for all courses. Please remember Ravi wants seats in EC, CS or IT in top Govt. Engineering College. Only first 10 options are shown in this article. You can check upto 30 options in Parinama Insights.

Ravi found that he could get a seat in PKD or KNR with his rank. He wanted to check what seats he will get based on 2010 data.

Well Ravi could see he has a chance only in PKD. He is not happy with the options so he runs the Insights Page with CS courses only. He repeats this for EC and IT also.

Ravi finally decides that his best choice to get an admission would be to get into KNR for CS course. So he will now prepare his online options making sure KNR/CS option is high up in the list. He need not mention this as first option. He can always put a couple of top colleges way above the KNR/CS so that he could get into other top colleges if there is a vacant seat.

He now check what are the closing ranks for Govt. Engg College Thrissur. He finds that the closing rank is around 4632

Closing Ranks for CS for TCR (2011 data)
Does it makes sense to put TCR as a top option? Well the chances of Ravi getting TCT/CS is very low. There is a difference of 3000 ranks between his rank (7500) and Closing Rank of TCR/CS. It would be in his best interest if he does not enter that as his top options.

A small tip will be helpful: Ravi should be entering list of colleges that is around 500 ranks plus minus. This means that if the Closing rank for a colleges or course is between 7000 to 8000 Ravi has a very good chance to get the course. Please note you can enter any number of options in KEAM site.

I hope this article gave you an insight on how to choose a college and course intelligently. You can ask general questions to me. I won't be able to help you individually.
